Brian Varley retires

We say goodbye to Brian Varley this week, as he begins his retirement. Brian has worked for many years as a University Research Fellow, providing support to the group in our many activities here and abroad, most notably through his expertise in equipment development. We wish Brian all the best for his retirement, and his voyage on the high seas!

Royal Visit

Professor John Durell retires

Professor John Durell has retired today after a long and productive career in nuclear physics. Since coming to the University of Manchester in 1970, John has held many notable positions, including Head of the Nuclear Group, Head of Department (Physics and Astronomy), Dean of Faculty (Engineering and Physical Sciences), and since the merger between UMIST and the Victoria University of Manchester, the post of Head of School (Physics and Astronomy). We wish John a happy retirement, and all the best for the future.

The website for the 14th UK Nuclear Physics Summer School is now online, and can be found here [Link no longer active, 15/04//08]. The summer school will run from August 29th to September 8th 2007, and is being organised by Paul Campbell of the University of Manchester and Dan Watts of the University of Edinburgh. The website includes further information, including details of the lecturers and an online registration form.

Return to the Schuster Laboratory

After an eight month period based the the Simon Building, the nuclear-physics group moved back into the Schuster Laboratory in late March. The group is now entirely contained on the fourth-floor. The lab has been extended into what was the old Seminar Room, the groups computers and servers now occupy the old laser lab, and the target-makers lab has been converted into a Library and Meeting Room. Although most staff members have returned to the same offices, their office numbers have been incremented by two - the new numbers are given on the personnel pages.

Launch of the Nuclear Technology Education Consortium (NTEC)

A national M.Sc. programme in nuclear science and technology was launched on
26th September 2005, with 23 students registeded on the course. The consortium involves
11 universities and research institutions. The nuclear physics group at Manchester is
delivering a core module in the programme on Radiation and Radiological Protection.

Prize Winning Presentation

All of our first and second year students recently attended the XIIIth Nuclear-Physics Summer School, held at University College Chester. The school is attended by about 50 postgraduate nuclear physics students, both from the UK and abroad. As part of the school, students are required to make a ten minute presentation about their research. We are proud to announce that Ben Kay won the prize for the best presentation by a first-year student, about his transfer reaction experiments carried out at Yale. Well done Ben!
New PhD students

We have two new PhD students joining our research group in the 2005-2006 academic year. Ernesto Mané and David Steppenbeck. Ernesto joined the group in late September and will work under the supervision of Jon Billowes, on laser spectroscopy work with the new Manchester-Birmingham ion-cooler at ISOLDE in CERN. David is due to join the group in the new year.
Schuster Laboratory Refurbishment

The Schuster Laboratory is presently undergoing refurbishment. During the refurbishment, the Nuclear Physics group members are being temporarily re-housed on the third-floor of the Simon Building, on the corner of Oxford Road and Brunswick Street. The nuclear-physics laboratory space is being temporarily shifted to the second-floor teaching wing. All group members are still contactable by their usual telephone numbers and email addresses. We will move back into our newly-refurbished offices and lab in February 2006.
